Questions by topic
- Use HPE Aruba Networking solutions to log issues and monitor behavior16
- Interpret and respond to endpoint classification data7
- Remediate the security risk5
Investigate5%7 questions
This small domain is a timed investigation. Candidates analyze a threat with HPE Aruba Networking security tools, collect and preserve evidence, and package the findings for a security team.
Skills tested
- Follow a threat analysis method within a fixed time.
- Collect and preserve evidence, then document the findings for delivery.
Questions by topic
- Perform a comprehensive threat analysis in a set timeframe7
Written Items20%22 questions
Written items close the exam. Candidates review the log of their own lab activities and identify the key information in it, which shows what they did and why.
Skills tested
- Read an activity log and pick out the critical findings.
- Explain the security decisions made during the lab tasks.
Questions by topic
- Identify key important information from the log of your activities in the practical exam22
Requirements
- Required: pass the HPE Network Security Expert Written Exam before registering for this practical exam.
- Recommended: four to five years of networking experience, including two to three years in security-focused roles.
About the HPE4-A50 exam
HPE4-A50 is a live lab exam that tests whether an expert engineer can protect, monitor and investigate an enterprise network built on HPE Aruba Networking products. It is the second half of the HPE Aruba Networking Certified Expert - Network Security (ACX-NS) certification, after the HPE Network Security Expert Written Exam. The lab work runs through ClearPass Policy Manager, ArubaOS gateways and AOS-CX switches, and written items then ask about that work. ACX-NS stays valid for three years.
Protect and Defend is the largest domain, and role-based access control draws the most questions in the PlanetCert practice test. The explanations follow a policy decision from end to end: how ClearPass assigns a role, how the gateway or switch enforces it, and where the logs show the result. Study Mode suits the written items, which ask what the log of the lab work shows. Brainy AI Assistant can explain how Dynamic Segmentation tunnels user traffic, or how OCSP differs from a certificate revocation list.

How to prepare for HPE4-A50
- 1
Run each objective on lab gear
The exam is a live lab, so reading alone is not enough. Configure ClearPass services, PEF roles, AppRF rules and Dynamic Segmentation on ArubaOS and AOS-CX until each task feels routine.
- 2
Stand up a small PKI
Issue server and client certificates from a Windows certificate authority, then use them for 802.1X and for ClearPass. Test revocation with both a CRL and OCSP.
- 3
Drill role-based access end to end
Role-based access control has the most questions in the practice test. Trace one user from authentication in CPPM through role assignment to enforcement on a gateway, an AOS-CX switch and an IAP.
- 4
Save work the way the grader expects
Tasks build on each other and everything is graded at the end. Save results in the stated format and folder, and follow the naming in each task, because automated scoring can depend on it.
- 5
Practise the written items last
Keep a short log while working through lab tasks, then answer questions about it. Use the HPE4-A50 practice test in Study Mode for these items, and ask Brainy AI Assistant to check each explanation of a security decision.

HPE4-A50 glossary
18 terms from the exam objectives and the vendor's official material, each defined in a sentence.
- 802.1X authentication
- A port-based method in which a device must prove its identity to an authentication server before it gets network access.
- AOS-CX
- The operating system that runs on HPE Aruba Networking CX switches.
- Application Recognition and Filtering (AppRF)
- An ArubaOS feature that identifies applications through deep packet inspection, so policy can allow, block or limit them.
- Certificate revocation lists (CRL)
- A list that a certificate authority publishes of the certificates it has revoked before their expiry date.
- Certificate signing requests (CSR)
- Requests that a device or server sends to a certificate authority, with its public key, to get a signed certificate.
- ClearPass Device Insight (CPDI)
- A tool that discovers and profiles devices on the network, so that policies can treat each type of device correctly.
- ClearPass Policy Manager (CPPM)
- The HPE Aruba Networking policy server that authenticates users and devices and decides which role and access each one gets.
- Device posture assessment
- A check of a device's health, such as its patches or antivirus state, before or while it gets access.
- Dynamic Segmentation
- HPE Aruba Networking's way of applying the same role-based policy to wired and wireless users, often by tunneling traffic to a gateway.
- Enforcement profiles
- ClearPass objects that define what happens to a request that matches a policy, such as the role or VLAN to assign.
- MAC authentication
- Access control that identifies a device by its hardware MAC address, often used for devices that cannot run 802.1X.
- Micro-segmentation
- Splitting a network into very small zones, down to single users or devices, so that a threat cannot move freely.
- Mobile Device Management (MDM)
- Software that enrolls and manages mobile devices and reports their compliance, which ClearPass can use in access decisions.
- Network Analytics Engine (NAE)
- The AOS-CX framework that runs agents and scripts on the switch to monitor its state and raise alerts.
- Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP)
- A protocol that asks a server, at the moment of use, whether a certificate has been revoked.
- Policy Enforcement Firewall (PEF)
- The role-based firewall in ArubaOS that applies rules to each user's traffic according to the user's role.
- Quarantine VLANs
- Separate VLANs that hold non-compliant or risky devices, with access limited until the problem is fixed.
- User-Based Tunneling
- A Dynamic Segmentation method in which an AOS-CX switch sends a wired user's traffic through a tunnel to a gateway for policy.
