- Target or destroy specific resources without touching the rest of the configuration.
- Bring existing infrastructure under management with import blocks.
- Detect drift between state and real infrastructure and reconcile it.
Questions by topic

Develop and Troubleshoot Dynamic Configuration68 questions
This domain is about configuration that adapts and checks itself. Candidates validate input with tests, checks and custom conditions, query providers with data sources, compute values with HCL functions, use meta-arguments and complex types, and handle sensitive data, for example with Vault.
Skills tested

- Mark values as sensitive and explain where they still appear in state and outputs.
Questions by topic
- Use meta-arguments in configuration14
- Use language features to validate configuration13
- Configure input variables and outputs, including complex types13
- Compute and interpolate data using HCL functions18

Configure and Use Terraform Providers17 questions
Providers connect Terraform to APIs such as AWS. Candidates explain the plugin-based architecture, configure aliases, versions and sources, pass providers to child modules, set up authentication, and troubleshoot provider errors.
Skills tested
- Use provider aliases to deploy to more than one region or account.
- Pass provider configurations from the root module to child modules.
- Configure provider authentication and explain the order in which credentials are used.

Collaborate on Infrastructure as Code Using HCP Terraform22 questions
The last domain moves the workflow into HCP Terraform. Candidates analyze its run workflow, configure workspaces and team access, manage provider credentials, and explain policy as code and governance features. HashiCorp tests this domain through the multiple-choice questions, not the labs.
Skills tested
- Explain the HCP Terraform run workflow, run triggers and run tasks.
- Configure workspaces, execution modes and team permissions.
- Set up dynamic provider credentials for a workspace.
- Compare policy enforcement levels within a policy set.
Questions by topic
- Manage provider credentials in HCP Terraform7
- Analyze the HCP Terraform run workflow7
- Analyze policy as code and governance features5
- Understand HCP Terraform workspaces and their configuration options, including access management3
Requirements
- No certification is required first, but HashiCorp expects extensive production experience with Terraform and its AWS provider.
- Recommended: Terraform Associate (004), which HashiCorp strongly recommends, or the same knowledge.
- Recommended: Linux command-line skills and experience with the YAML, JSON, HCL and CSV file formats.
- Recommended: experience using cloud credentials and a grasp of the networking stack, including TCP/IP and UDP.
About the TAO-Pro exam
TAO-Pro is HashiCorp's professional-level Terraform exam for engineers who already write and run Terraform in production. Much of it is lab work in a prepared Linux environment with VS Code, where candidates change Terraform configuration and provision real AWS infrastructure. Multiple-choice questions make up the rest. Its six domains run from resource lifecycle and dynamic configuration to modules, providers and HCP Terraform. Passing earns HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Authoring and Operations Professional.
Dynamic configuration holds the most questions in the PlanetCert practice test, led by HCL functions and meta-arguments. The explanations show how Terraform evaluates an expression or plans a change, which matters for for_each keys, moved blocks and import blocks. Study Mode suits the HCP Terraform domain, which the exam tests through multiple-choice questions. Because so much of the exam is lab work, each missed question is worth repeating as a small change in a sandbox. Brainy AI Assistant can explain a confusing plan output or a lock file conflict.
How to earn the certification
- Earns
- HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Authoring and Operations ProfessionalProfessional
The certification is valid for two years and is renewed by passing the exam again.
- Before
- TA-004 Terraform Associate (004)
HashiCorp strongly recommends it, or the same knowledge, before this exam.
- TA-004 Terraform Associate (004)
How to prepare for TAO-Pro
- 1
Provision a small AWS stack by hand
In a sandbox AWS account, write configuration for an instance, a security group, an S3 bucket and IAM roles, the resource types the labs draw on. Plan, apply and destroy it several times.
- 2
Break state on purpose, then repair it
Change a resource in the AWS console, then detect and reconcile the drift. Import a resource with an import block and rename another with a moved block.
- 3
Add tests and conditions to one module
Dynamic configuration has the most questions in the practice test. Give one module variable validation, preconditions, postconditions, check blocks and a terraform test with a mock provider.
- 4
Move the workflow into HCP Terraform
Connect the same configuration to an HCP Terraform workspace, set up dynamic provider credentials, and attach a policy set to see how enforcement levels change a run.
- 5
Rehearse with the documentation only
During the exam, candidates can use the Terraform and AWS provider documentation but no search engines. Practise finding answers there, then take the TAO-Pro practice test in Timed Mode and ask Brainy AI Assistant about each missed case.

TAO-Pro glossary
18 terms from the exam objectives and the vendor's official material, each defined in a sentence.
- backend block
- The block that tells Terraform where to store state, for example in an S3 bucket.
- check blocks
- Blocks whose assertions Terraform evaluates during plan and apply, reporting failures as warnings without stopping the run.
- Custom conditions (preconditions and postconditions)
- Rules attached to resources, data sources or outputs that stop a run when an assumption turns out to be false.
- Dependency lock file (.terraform.lock.hcl)
- The file in which terraform init records the exact provider versions and checksums it selected.
- depends_on
- A meta-argument that adds a dependency that Terraform cannot infer from references in the configuration.
- Drift detection
- Finding differences between the real infrastructure and what Terraform's state and configuration expect.
- Dynamic blocks
- Blocks that generate repeated nested blocks, such as security group rules, from a collection.
- Dynamic provider credentials
- Short-lived cloud credentials that HCP Terraform obtains for each run through workload identity, so no static keys are stored.
- Execution plan
- Terraform's preview of the actions it will take to make the real infrastructure match the configuration.
- for_each
- A meta-argument that creates one instance of a resource or module for each item in a map or set.
- import blocks
- Configuration blocks that bring existing infrastructure under Terraform management through a normal plan and apply.
- Local values
- Named expressions in a module that let a value be computed once and used in many places.
- Mock providers
- Stand-in providers for Terraform tests, which let the tests run without creating real infrastructure.
- moved blocks
- Configuration blocks that record a resource's new address, so Terraform moves it in state instead of destroying and recreating it.
- optional() modifier
- A type constraint modifier that marks an object attribute as optional and can give it a default value.
- Pessimistic constraint operator (~>)
- A version constraint that lets only the rightmost given number increase, so ~> 5.1 allows 5.2 but not 6.0.
- Policy sets
- Groups of policies that HCP Terraform applies to chosen workspaces to enforce rules on their runs.
- terraform_remote_state
- A data source that reads the root module outputs of another configuration from its state.
