Which AHIMA credentials are currently offered?
AHIMA currently authorizes RHIA, RHIT, CCA, CCS, CCS-P, CDIP, CHDA, and CHPS.
Can AHIMA exams be taken online?
Yes. In the U.S., CHDA, CHPS, and CDIP can be taken online with OnVUE; RHIA, RHIT, CCA, CCS, and CCS-P are test-center exams.
Which credentials supersede others?
RHIA supersedes RHIT, and CCS or CCS-P supersedes CCA.
Which exams require code books?
CCA, CCS, and CCS-P use published codebook lists, and AHIMA says the 2026 lists start on May 1, 2026.
What is the retesting waiting period?
CCA, CCS, RHIT, and RHIA have a 30-day retest wait; CCS-P, CDIP, CHDA, and CHPS have a 90-day wait.
How long is the eligibility window?
Candidates have 120 calendar days from application approval to test, with 30-day extension increments available for up to 90 days.
How long are the exams?
CCA is 2 hours; RHIT and RHIA are 3.5 hours; CDIP is 3 hours; CCS, CCS-P, CHDA, and CHPS are 4 hours.
Do AHIMA credentials still use paper certificates?
No. AHIMA moved newly issued credentials to virtual certificates on April 1, 2018.
