Requirements
- Required: a current ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
- Required: either ten completed Six Sigma Black Belt projects or at least five years in a Black Belt or Master Black Belt role.
- Required: approval in ASQ's portfolio review, where expert Master Black Belts score the candidate's work before booking.
About the CMBB exam
The CMBB exam tests whether an experienced Black Belt can plan, staff, teach and measure a Six Sigma program across a whole organization. ASQ accepts candidates only after they hold a current Certified Six Sigma Black Belt certification, meet an experience requirement and pass a portfolio review. The exam has two parts: a multiple-choice section, then a performance-based assessment built on an organization's improvement scenario. Passing earns the ASQ Certified Master Black Belt certification.
Advanced Data Management and Analytic Methods is the largest domain, and it also has the most questions in the PlanetCert practice test. Those questions cover measurement systems analysis, regression, design of experiments and DFSS tools. The explanations walk through the reasoning, for example why a destructive test needs its own measurement systems analysis. Flashcard mode suits the planning tools and change models. Brainy AI Assistant can solve a capability or regression problem step by step, or compare ADKAR with Kotter's 8 Steps.

How to prepare for CMBB
- 1
Confirm eligibility and the testing window
Check the Black Belt certification, the experience requirement and the portfolio review first. ASQ offers the exam only in set testing windows, so plan the application early.
- 2
Assemble the portfolio evidence
The review scores three areas: teaching, coaching and mentoring; occupational experience and responsibility; and technical experience and innovation. Collect project evidence for each area before applying.
- 3
Rebuild the advanced statistics
The largest domain covers destructive MSA, logistic regression, ARIMA and designs such as split-plot and D-optimal. Work examples in statistical software until each output is easy to read.
- 4
Rehearse the scenario section
The second part presents an organization weighing several improvement projects and asks open-ended questions about it. Practise by writing short answers to case studies, such as which project to fund first and why.
- 5
Drill the multiple-choice part
Take the CMBB practice test domain by domain in Study Mode, then in Timed Mode. Both parts are open-book, so learn where each topic sits in the reference books while reviewing the explanations.
