About the Analytics-Admn-201 exam
Analytics-Admn-201 checks that an administrator can plan, install, secure and maintain Tableau Server running on a single machine. Its questions run from server processes, licensing and hardware needs to identity stores, permissions, backups and upgrades. The exam is written for Tableau Server 2022.3, and Salesforce recommends about six months of hands-on work with the product first. Passing earns the Salesforce Certified Tableau Server Administrator credential.
Administration carries the largest weight on the exam and has the most questions in the PlanetCert practice test, from backups and schedules to admin views and tabcmd. The explanations show why an answer is right, for example why a Deny rule overrides an Allow rule for a user in two groups. Flashcard Mode suits the server process names, such as Backgrounder, VizQL Server and Data Engine. Brainy AI Assistant can explain which TSM command fits a task, or which site roles a license type allows.
How to earn the certification
- Earns
- Salesforce Certified Tableau Server AdministratorIntermediate
The credential stays active through Salesforce's annual maintenance on Trailhead.
- After
- Analytics-Arch-201 Tableau Architect
The next step for designing larger deployments. Distributed, multi-node servers belong to that exam, not to this one.
- Analytics-Con-301 Tableau Consultant
Listed as the other next step after this credential in the Tableau track.
- Analytics-Arch-201 Tableau Architect
How to prepare for Analytics-Admn-201
- 1
Build a one-machine test server
Install Tableau Server on a single virtual machine with a local identity store. Open TSM and the web interface, and note which processes run and what each one does.
- 2
Pair each license with its roles
Write out which site roles the Creator, Explorer and Viewer licenses allow. Then import a few users from a CSV file and check the site role each one gets.
- 3
Predict permissions before testing
Give one group Allow and another group Deny on the same capability, then predict what a member of both groups sees. Deny wins, and None neither grants nor denies.
- 4
Spend most hours on Administration
It is the largest domain. Run tsm maintenance backup and restore, schedule an extract refresh, set a subscription, and read the Background Tasks for Extracts view after each change.
- 5
Close with a timed run
Take the Analytics-Admn-201 practice test in Timed Mode, then review every missed question. Ask Brainy AI Assistant to explain any TSM command or permission result that is still unclear.

Analytics-Admn-201 glossary
17 terms from the exam objectives and the vendor's official material, each defined in a sentence.
- Backgrounder
- The server process that runs scheduled jobs, such as extract refreshes, subscriptions and alerts.
- Cache Server
- The process that stores query results, so repeated requests for the same data return faster.
- Clean reinstall
- Removing Tableau Server completely and installing it again from scratch, then restoring a backup.
- Data Engine (Hyper)
- The process that loads extracts and answers queries against them.
- Data Source Certification
- A badge that marks a published data source as trusted, which also raises it in search and recommendations.
- Data-driven alerts
- Email alerts that a user sets on a view, sent when its data crosses a chosen threshold.
- Identity Store
- The user directory Tableau Server checks at sign-in: a local store managed by Tableau, or an external one such as Active Directory.
- Live connection
- A connection that sends each query straight to the source database, so a view always shows current data.
- Nested projects
- Projects placed inside other projects to organize content, where permissions can pass down from the parent.
- Performance recording
- A feature that records how long each step of loading a view takes, so slow queries and rendering can be found.
- Site roles
- Roles such as Creator, Explorer and Viewer that set the most a user can do on a site. The license type limits which roles a user can hold.
- tabcmd
- A command-line client for content tasks, such as publishing workbooks, exporting views and refreshing extracts.
- Tableau Run-As Service account
- The operating system account that Tableau Server's services run under on the host machine.
- Tableau Server Repository
- The database where Tableau Server keeps its users, content and usage data. Custom administrative views read from it.
- Tableau Services Manager (TSM)
- The administration tool, with a web interface and a command line, that configures, starts, stops, backs up and maintains Tableau Server.
- Trusted Tickets
- A sign-in method in which a trusted web server requests a ticket for a user, often so that embedded views open without a second sign-in.
- VizQL Server
- The server process that renders the visualizations users see when they open a view.
