Board Types and Concepts20 questions
This domain covers what each board type is for. Scrum boards run work in sprints from a backlog, while Kanban boards keep work in continuous flow. Candidates compare the two and create boards in company-managed and team-managed projects.
Skills tested
- Describe the sprint lifecycle on a Scrum board, from sprint planning to the retrospective.
- Pick Scrum or Kanban for a team, based on how it plans and delivers work.
- Create a board from scratch, from an existing project or from a saved filter.
- Tell what a company-managed board can configure that a team-managed board cannot.

Configuring Board Permissions and Filters43 questions
This is the largest domain. A board shows only what its saved filter returns, so candidates write JQL for board filters, subfilters and quick filters, and fix boards that users cannot see because of filter sharing or space permissions.
Skills tested
- Write JQL with operators and functions such as currentUser(), membersOf() and openSprints().
- Build a multi-project board filter with project IN.
- Choose between the board filter, a subfilter and a quick filter for a need.
- Share a saved filter so that the right people can see the board.
- Separate the changes a board administrator can make from those that need a space administrator.

Configuring Board Columns and Swimlanes25 questions
This domain shapes the board's grid. Candidates map workflow statuses to columns, set column constraints, and choose among the six swimlane types, including query-based swimlanes written in JQL.
Skills tested
- Add, rename, reorder and delete columns, and map several statuses to one column.
- Set minimum and maximum column constraints and read the red and yellow header warnings.
- Write JQL for query swimlanes, and switch to assignee or epic swimlanes when they fit the team better.

- Column Configuration10
Configuring Board Appearance15 questions
This domain controls what each card shows. Candidates add fields to the card layout, color cards by one of four methods, and use the Days in Column indicator to spot work that has stalled.
Skills tested
- Add or remove card fields separately for the backlog and the active sprint.
- Color cards by priority, assignee or JQL query, and order the queries, because the first match wins.
- Turn the Days in Column indicator on or off, and know its default on each board type.

- Card Layout Configuration5
- Card Colors5
- Days in Column Indicator5
Configuring Estimation and Working Days17 questions
This domain covers how a board measures work and time. Candidates choose an estimation statistic, set up time tracking, enable estimation in team-managed spaces, and set working days so that reports stay accurate.
Skills tested
- Choose Story Points, Original Time Estimate or Business Value as the estimation statistic.
- Explain how time tracking differs from estimation, and pick a tracking option.
- Enable estimation in a team-managed space from the space settings.
- Set working days, non-working days, region and timezone, and name the reports they change.
Questions by topic
- Working Days Configuration6
- Estimation in Team-Managed Spaces5
- Time Tracking Configuration4
- Estimation Configuration2
Requirements
- No formal prerequisites.
- Recommended: Jira Essentials first, for candidates who are new to Jira.
- Recommended: experience configuring Jira Software boards, knowledge of Scrum and Kanban, and an understanding of JQL.
About the ACA-905 exam
ACA-905 is an associate exam about what a Jira Software board shows and how it shows it. It suits the Scrum Masters, project leads and board administrators who configure boards for their teams. Filters written in Jira Query Language (JQL) carry the most weight, because a board displays only the work that its saved filter returns. Passing earns the Atlassian Certified in Jira Software Board Configuration (ACA-JSWBC) credential.
JQL for board filters is the largest single topic in the PlanetCert practice test, followed by swimlanes and column configuration. The explanations keep apart three filters that are easy to confuse: the board filter, subfilters and quick filters. Flashcard mode suits the settings with fixed rules, such as the six swimlane types and the four card color methods. Brainy AI Assistant can check a JQL query, or explain why a column constraint warns but does not block a move.

How to prepare for ACA-905
- 1
Set up two practice boards
Create one Scrum board and one Kanban board in a Jira Software Cloud site, and add enough sample work items to fill a few columns. Every setting in the syllabus can then be changed by hand.
- 2
Rewrite one board filter five ways
Filter by project, by component, by assignee with currentUser() and across two projects with project IN. Then add a subfilter and two quick filters, and compare what each one hides.
- 3
Give filters and permissions the most time
Configuring Board Permissions and Filters is the largest domain. Share a saved filter with a group, then check the board as another user to see when it disappears.
- 4
Rebuild columns, lanes and cards
Map statuses to columns, set column constraints, add query swimlanes, and change card colors and card fields. Note which changes need a board administrator and which need a space administrator.
- 5
Time a run, then redo misses
Take the ACA-905 practice test in Timed Mode and read every explanation. Repeat each missed setting on a practice board, and ask Brainy AI Assistant to check any JQL query that returns the wrong work items.

ACA-905 glossary
17 terms from the exam objectives and the vendor's official material, each defined in a sentence.
- Board administrator
- The person who can change a board's configuration, such as its filter, columns and swimlanes.
- Burndown Chart
- A sprint report that plots the remaining work against time, using the board's estimation statistic and working days.
- Business Value
- An estimation statistic that rates work by the value it brings instead of by its effort.
- Column Constraints
- Minimum and maximum work item limits for a column; they warn with a colored header but do not block moves.
- Company-Managed Projects
- Projects set up by Jira administrators with shared settings, whose boards can use any saved filter.
- Control Chart
- A report of how long work items take to move through chosen columns, used to judge how steady the flow is.
- Cumulative Flow Diagram
- A report that shows how many work items sit in each column over time, so that bottlenecks show as widening bands.
- Days in Column
- Dots on a card that show how long the work item has stayed in its current column.
- JQL (Jira Query Language)
- The text query language that selects work items in Jira, used in board filters, subfilters, quick filters, swimlanes and card colors.
- Original Time Estimate
- An estimation statistic that measures work in time, such as hours, instead of story points.
- Query Swimlanes
- Horizontal rows on a board, each defined by its own JQL query.
- Quick Filters
- Buttons on a board that filter the cards with a JQL query on demand; several can be on at once.
- Saved Filters
- JQL queries stored with a name and sharing settings; every board is built on one.
- Status Mapping
- The link between each workflow status and a board column, which moves a card when its status changes.
- Story Points
- A relative unit of effort that the team gives to each story, used to plan and track sprints.
- Subfilters
- Extra JQL conditions, set by the board administrator, that narrow what the board filter returns.
- Team-Managed Projects
- Projects that the team configures for itself, with simpler settings that apply only to that project.
